Director’s Note
Commedia dell’Arte is a highly physical and playful theatrical style. Throughout this process we took play pretty seriously- incorporating soccer, games, and improvisational dance in our rehearsals. It is true, rehearsing for this show has not been without its pandemic-related challenges, but we have been immeasurably blessed as well.
I love the Biblical account of Sarah and her sense of humor at the incongruity of life. After giving birth to Isaac when she was over 90 years old, she said “God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me” (Genesis 21:6). The ability to laugh at ourselves and our circumstances can bring spiritual relief. The past few years have been difficult for many people. In our show, many characters face seemingly insurmountable problems. We hope you will laugh along with us at the ridiculous and unreal circumstances that Truffaldino, Beatrice, Florindo, and all of the others find themselves in and the varying ways that they respond.
